Christian Witnesses

What do we mean by Christian witness?  Here's a great example from one of my previous churches.  One of the couples would always tell their neighbors and friends good things about what was going on at the church.  They made one person so excited that she decided to start coming to our church.  At the same time, the church was starting a food pantry.  She told her daughter about it, and her daughter came to the food pantry with her two young daughters.  While their mom selected food, I played with the kids on the floor.  Then, I helped them out to their car.  While at the church, they learned about our Vacation Bible School.  So, both kids came to VBS.  They had such a good time, that they wanted to start coming to church.  So, their grandmother started bringing them because their mom worked most Sundays, but their mom and dad would come too when they could.  Like the couple that invited their grandmother, the girls also got excited and started telling their friends and family about all of the great things they were doing at church, and they got their aunt and uncle to start coming too.  When we started a new Junior Youth Group, they would often bring a friend.  The point of this whole story is that what began with just one couple sharing good stories about their church turned into 8 new church members, and 5 new youth kids.  13 new disciples because of one couple's witness!

We are in the middle of many baptisms here at the church.  Will you take a moment to stop and say "thank you" to God with me?

Every time there is a baptism in church, we aren't just observers.  We are active participants.  We are asked questions, we make promises and we are expected to live up to those promises.

In participating in every baptism, we are given an opportunity to once again affirm the vows that were made for us at our baptism (if we were baptized very young), and the vows we took for ourselves when we were confirmed or professed our faith and became a member of the church.  One of those vows is to support the ministries of the church by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness.  That couple were great Christian witnesses who used their witness to make new disciples, and those new disciples also became Christian witnesses who made even more disciples.  That's how the church continues; current disciples becoming Christian witnesses who make new disciples that will also become witnesses who make disciples.  And the pattern keeps going.  Today could be your opportunity to be a great Christian witness for tomorrow's newest disciple.  What good stories will you tell about how God has worked in your life, and how t he ministries of this church have inspired you?  Imagine how many new disciples could come to Christ when you share your Christian witness!

If you don't tell them good things about your church, who will?

Reverend Dave
