The Community of Christians
Text: Mark 4:10
When he was alone, those who were around him along with the twelve asked him about the parables. (NRSV)
Jesus teaches us when we are in solitude with him but, Jesus also teaches us when we are gathered with other Christians in study and conversation. I have had some of my greatest insights into the depths of God’s Word while I have been in Christian conversation with others.
Most specifically, I have learned the most from Jesus through the words of others during Bible studies and other small groups within the churches I have served. It is surprising how the wisdom of God is revealed during the give and take of our brothers and sisters in faith. There are insights that I would have never come to without the perception of others.
Although there are important times of learning from Jesus in complete solitude with him, it is clear that we were never meant to be Christians alone. We are designed to be in a body of people that become the Body of Christ for the world. God gathers us in community that we may uphold one another and learn from one another as Jesus continues to teach us together.
Pray with me:
Jesus, as I gather with the other disciples in my life, teach us through your inspiration and insight given to each of us, as we share in Christian fellowship, study, and conversation. AMEN.
