Growing Weary
Text: Isaiah 40:28
Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. (NRSV)
There are multiple ways that we are not like God. I know that this seems like a self-evident statement but, how many of us think that we can go on and on and not wear out? We think that we can work through each day as if we have unlimited spiritual energy. We believe that the daily struggle to live out the Kingdom of God lifestyle in the kingdom of this world will not cause us to faint or grow weary.
We are not God and, if we do not take care of our spiritual needs, we will “faint and grow weary”. There is a reason that God set a day aside for us to rest. We all need to be replenished on a weekly basis. Isaiah finishes out his thought with, “Even youth will fall exhausted but those who wait upon the Lord will be lifted up with wings like eagles.”
The key to that last phrase are the words “those who wait upon the Lord.” We cannot face the brokenness of our world without the power of God in our lives. We cannot receive the power of God in our lives if we do not spend time with God.
How is your prayer life? Are you spending time with God each day and extended time with God at least once a week? How often do you read your Bible? Are you being fed by the Word of God to receive the energy you need not to faint or grow weary? Have you set a day aside to worship God and rest your body for the week to come? God may not faint or grow weary but, you are not God. Be intentional about allowing God to give you wings like eagles as you wait upon the Lord.
Pray with me:
Lord, sometimes I think that I can work my way though any situation and not grow weary in my efforts. Remind me to take the time I need to wait upon you. Teach me the value of intentional time spent in prayer, Bible reading, worship, and rest. AMEN.
