Hello, friends!
I am sitting here writing this on Wednesday afternoon, and it is storming. It surprised me because when I walked home for lunch, it was sunny. As I sat at the dining room table eating lunch with my wife and son, we started hearing loud noises. Sherrie asked if that was thunder and I looked out the window and it was still a bright, sun shining day. I thought it must be the garbage truck or something like that. The sound kept coming. As we moved to the other side of the house, I looked out the window and saw a huge dark cloud rolling in. From one side of the house, it was sunny. From the other side of the house, it was windy, dark and stormy. The storm came quickly, it approached in just the amount of time that it took to eat lunch, and within a half hour it was gone. Now, it is back to a sun shining day.
Isn't that how life is? The storms of life come up on us so quickly sometimes that we never saw them coming. Loved ones pass away, jobs become insecure, relationships go through rough times, financial concerns arise. Sometimes we just didn't see these things coming, just like that Wednesday storm. Sometimes these storms are personal and they only affect us. For everyone else in the house, even though they are just feet away from us, the view from their window is bright and sunny, while our view from a different perspective of life is stormy.
But you know what else this storm taught me? It's that the storm is only temporary. Before the storm, it's sunny. After the storm, it's sunny. If we can see the storm coming, if we can look through a different window and try to prepare ourselves for the future, we could prepare for a storm. If we saw storm clouds coming in time, we would get inside, we might move some outdoor furniture. We would make sure anything valuable won't get caught in the storm. And we would know that when the storm is over, we can go back outside, we can put the furniture back where it belongs and we can have fun. Some storms can be prepared for, so let's do our best to prepare for the things we can control. But when storms are beyond our control, let's ride out the storm with faith, knowing that sunshine is waiting on the other side. Amen.
