It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's God!

Did you know there are over a hundred scriptures in the Bible about people looking up into the sky to see what God is up to?  If you think for a few seconds, you might even be able to name a few off the top of your head...the announcement of Jesus' birth, God setting lights (the stars) in the sky during the creation story, the dove coming down out of Heaven during Jesus' baptism.  It's not always good news though.  Sometimes it is a warning that something fierce is coming...wind, rain, thunder, lightning, fire, the moon turning blood red.  It makes me think that God really likes to use the sky to let us know what God is thinking and doing.  Maybe we should look up at the sky more often.

This week is the Atlantic City Airshow.  We're going to have our eyes on the sky looking at all of the airplanes going by.  But afterwards, are we just going to go back to living as we were?  Or could this be an opportunity to start a habit of looking to the sky for messages from God.  People often ask me "why can't I see God at work" or "where is God".  If we are truly wanting to see God, we should look in the places where God likes to appear.  I believe God appears through other people primarily.  But there are tons of Biblical examples of God also communicating with us through the sky.  So, if we really want to see God, let's look at how God is using the people around us, but let's also look for God up in the sky.

This means we should be intentional about looking for God there and really expecting that we will find God there.  After all, it's hard to find what you haven't really looked for.  It would be like playing hide and seek by just wandering around hoping that the person hiding will loudly announce their presence to you.  Actually, that is exactly what God does sometimes and even then we still don't notice.  God isn't playing hard to find.  God wants to be found!  Sometimes we're distracted, we find other explanations for the ways that God has interacted with us or we're not even looking and we don't even notice what is right in front of us.  But when we are intentional about finding God, it doesn't take long at all.

Blessings,
Reverend Dave
