And Be Thankful

We felt the Holy Spirit working in the church office this week.  We always do, but this week it was more obvious than usual.  On Tuesdays, Kay and I have some "download time" to discuss the week ahead.  Then, for the most part, we go and take care of our part of the responsibilities.  This week, as I was in my office, and she was in hers, we ended up making ministry content about the same topic, and it wasn't something we discussed on Tuesday.  I was recording a video for Thankful Thursday, and she was writing this devotion.  Priscilla and I will have this happen with hymns sometimes too.  Kay and I were both creating content about the Baptismal Covenant.  I pray that you will enjoy Thursday's video if you haven't yet, and that you will enjoy Kay's devotion as well!

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. – Ephesians 4:4-6

How many times have we heard “Remember your baptism, and be thankful”?

That can kind of trip a person up, can’t it?

Lots of us (me included) can’t actually remember our baptisms.  I was baptized as an infant and I have the feeling lots of the people reading this were also.  How can we be expected to remember something that happened when we were so very tiny?

Think of it this way.  “Remember that you ARE baptized, and be thankful.”

Each time a person is baptized at AUMC, the entire congregation participates.  Everyone present vows to nurture one another, as well as the one being baptized.  The presiding pastor leads the congregation through the Apostles’ Creed.  This is a statement of Christian faith, and by saying it, we reaffirm what we believe.  We also are remembering:

  • I have been baptized.
  • I am a child of God, who is our Creator.
  • Jesus Christ is my Savior.
  • The Holy Spirit is with us all.

It is good to remember such things!

(P.S.:  If you interested in being baptized, I'm certain that Reverend Dave would love to have a conversation with you!  Talk with him to set up a meeting, or call the church office.)
