Unlikely Companionship: Simon of Cyrene - contemporary service

Reverend David L. Ledford, III

Have you ever felt alone?  One of my favorite characteristics of the Church is its emphasis on fellowship. People need people. We might not always need two hundred people, but the right person or two can bring great healing. When Jesus was carrying the cross, having already been so badly hurt, there came a point when he could carry it no further. A total stranger, Simon of Cyrene, was told to help him the rest of the way. We'll call this the first time in Church history when someone was "voluntold" to do something. But his role was much deeper than just helping Jesus carry some wood. He was a companion in Jesus' most painful moment. That's what the Church must be to the world!
