I Am the Light of the World - traditional service
Jesus said "I am the light of the world". He said that in a first century context where light after sundown was very rare. Today, cities shine so bright with artificial light that they can be seen from Outer Space. Here in Absecon, on any given night, even through some amount of rain or fog, we can still see Atlantic City shining in the Eastern distance. But that wasn't the case in the first century. Except for the time when Jesus spoke these words. During a festival celebrating light, Jerusalem would literally be a shining city on a hill. In a world where that never happened, imagine the sight! Imagine how awes-some that would have been to those who saw it. Let's discuss this week how to find as much awe in God's light today as they did in ancient Jerusalem.
